SARAH’S SUMMER HOLIDAYS

(FOR EILEEN SHEA)

My name is Sarah Mercedes Jane and I am thirteen years old. My IQ is 163 on the Kinns-Noble scale. The Kinns-Noble runs to 180 hypothetical top. Let the figures speak for themselves. The TECC Aptitude Profile gives me highest indicated aptitudes as mathematician (9.7), musician, conductor (9.6), lawyer (9.3), and doctor, surgeon (9.3). I am pleased to record that it also rates my highest motivation in the same general areas (law and music being transposed), thus showing that I am well-adjusted. Remarkably well-adjusted.

Although I do not by choice participate in so-called ‘sports’, I have been forced by school regulations to spend a certain percentage of my time exercising my body. Fortunately I have been able to concentrate on the less egregious sorts: fencing, judo, parallel bars, ropes, high bar, swimming. It will be noticed that they have certain things in common: they require coordination, they are individual sports, and they are not necessarily (and necessarily not so far as I’m concerned) competitive. This is fine with me, for I am disgusted at the idea of competing with those retarded cows who must express themselves with brawn because they have no brain.

I hasten to add, nonetheless, that I can see some point to exercise: mens sana in corpore sano. I have recently become more aware of my body in that I began to menstruate six months ago. I am not yet regular but all the other signs of puberty are there, and at Christmas I allowed Rachel to force upon me four bras. She has been trying to get me into them since I was nine, but I have refused, I think wisely. Other girls at school have been wearing ‘training bras’ for several years and there is nothing more disgusting than their constant nattering and squeezing and poking. If I sound somewhat proud of myself, I admit I am. I have achieved puberty earlier than all but three of my classmates (cows all) and so have gained respect. This makes life much easier in certain ways. I hate to think of the teasing I would have to put up with if I were among the last. Finally, of course, it has begun. It is somewhat uncomfortable and, I gather from the books, will continue so for a year or two. But the discomfort is not great and I can safely conclude that the major part of it is over. So far as such development goes, I have only two things to cope with in the future: sexual intercourse and menopause. I assume neither is imminent.

The train has been stopped for five minutes in some picayune burg. Rachel assured me the train would be on time, but of course you can’t trust her on such questions. I certainly hope it is on time because all my books are in my suitcase and as it is on the rack above me I would have to ask someone to get it down for me. I loathe having to ask for help.
